DELTA: The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration has revoked the land title for the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) national secretariat in Abuja over the party’s failure to pay ground rent for two decades. The decision, announced by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has sparked reactions within the political sphere.
The property, located at Plot No. 243, Central Area, Cadastral Zone A00, was originally designated as the party’s new secretariat but remains incomplete.
A letter addressed to PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagun, confirmed that the revocation was due to non-payment of rent from January 1, 2006, to January 1, 2025.
The FCT Administration had reportedly issued multiple notices in newspapers and electronic media since 2023, urging property owners to clear outstanding payments.
According to officials, PDP’s failure to comply with the directives violated Section 28, Subsection 5 (a) and (b) of the Land Use Act, leading to the forfeiture of its rights over the land.
Speaking on the matter, Wike emphasized that no entity, regardless of political affiliation, is exempt from complying with Abuja’s land regulations. “The law is clear—landowners in the FCT must fulfill their obligations. If PDP or any other organization fails to pay for 20 years, consequences will follow,” he stated.
However, some party loyalists view the move as politically motivated. A senior PDP official, speaking anonymously, described the revocation as an “orchestrated attack” on the opposition. “This administration is using government institutions to undermine PDP. There are many other entities that owe the FCTA, yet only our party is being targeted,” he alleged.
With the land now reclaimed by the government, it remains uncertain whether PDP will seek legal redress or relocate its secretariat elsewhere. The development further intensifies tensions between the ruling party and the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
