Adewole Adebayo, 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has clarified that Malam Nasir El-Rufai is not representing the party in any coalition efforts ahead of the 2027 elections.
El-Rufai, who left the APC in March after a fallout with the presidency, has been calling for an opposition alliance under the SDP to challenge President Tinubu’s re-election bid. However, Adebayo distanced the party from El-Rufai’s efforts, stating the SDP has not authorized anyone, including El-Rufai, to speak or negotiate on its behalf.
Speaking on Channels TV, Adebayo said, “The SDP is not in any coalition led by anyone else. El-Rufai is not representing the SDP in any talks.”
He noted that while the party is exploring political options, it will only act under the guidance of its leadership, led by Alh. Shehu Gabam and Olu Agunloye.
Adebayo also reiterated his earlier stance that new entrants like El-Rufai would not be allowed to hijack the party for personal political battles.
