AEDC Restores Power to FCT Water Board Over Public Health Concerns, Sets Debt Deadline

By Peter Onyekachukwu

Electricity supply has been  to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Water Board following public outcry over water shortages in parts of Abuja, with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) citing concerns for public health and community wellbeing.

The reconnection, AEDC said, was approved by its Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye, in recognition of the critical role water supply plays in safeguarding residents’ health and safety.

“In recognition of the importance of water services and following widespread concerns expressed by residents, the Acting MD/CEO has directed the immediate reconnection of electricity supply to the FCT Water Board to enable the prompt restoration of water services across affected areas of the FCT,” the company stated.

The electricity firm described the move as a demonstration of its commitment to residents’ welfare, noting that access to essential services must be protected, particularly where public health is concerned.

However, AEDC clarified that the restoration was conditional, warning that the Water Board has been given a two-week ultimatum to present and commence the implementation of a credible repayment plan for its outstanding electricity bills.

In a statement signed by the Head of Brand Marketing and Corporate Communications, Omede Odekina, AEDC disclosed that the Water Board had accumulated over one year of unpaid electricity bills despite repeated notices and engagements.

The company stressed that failure to meet the deadline would result in a fresh disconnection in line with regulatory guidelines, adding that while it remains open to dialogue and collaborative solutions, disconnection remains a last resort.

AEDC further assured residents of its continued commitment to transparent engagement, regulatory compliance and the delivery of sustainable electricity services across the Federal Capital Territory.
