Khaby Lame, the Senegalese-born Italian content creator and the most-followed person on TikTok, has left the United States after being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over the weekend.
According to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official speaking to Forbes, Lame, 25, was taken into custody at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas on Friday for “overstaying the terms of his visa.” The detention reportedly took place as part of President Donald Trump’s intensified immigration enforcement efforts.
Lame was granted voluntary departure, a provision that allows non-citizens to leave the U.S. without receiving a formal deportation order. While the DHS did not disclose his destination, Lame posted an Instagram story on Monday tagging São Paulo, Brazil, suggesting he may be there currently.
Born in Senegal and raised in Turin, Italy, Lame holds Italian citizenship. He first gained popularity on TikTok during the COVID-19 pandemic by humorously debunking over-complicated “life hack” videos. His silent, expressive comedy quickly resonated with audiences worldwide, propelling him to over 162 million followers on TikTok. He also has over 80 million followers on Instagram and 12.5 million subscribers on YouTube.
Lame became the most-followed TikTok creator in June 2022, surpassing American influencer Charli D’Amelio.
