Anambra CP Seeks Tripartite Committee to Tackle Market Fire Outbreaks

By Peter Onyekachukeu, Anambra

ANAMBRA: The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has called for the formation of a tripartite committee to address the recurring fire outbreaks at markets across the state, particularly at the Main Market in Onitsha.

Speaking during an on-the-spot assessment of the recent fire incident at Ifejika Warehouse along Bida Road, the police chief expressed concern over the frequent destruction of goods worth billions of naira. He emphasized that the committee, comprising representatives from the police, the traders, and the government, would play a crucial role in finding lasting solutions to the problem.

“It is disheartening that these fire incidents keep occurring, causing huge losses to traders. Anambra does not have oil and gas revenues; our economy thrives on trade. If we do not take action, the continuous destruction of goods will push businesses elsewhere, negatively impacting the state’s economy,” Orutugu stated.

The CP also criticized some traders for supporting the sit-at-home directive, warning that such actions were crippling economic activities in the state.

“Anyone who desires progress should reject the sit-at-home order. Many traders want to open their shops on Mondays but are afraid of insecurity. However, I assure you that the security situation is improving. The police, in collaboration with the government, are making efforts to ensure a safe business environment,” he added.

He further revealed that discussions were ongoing between the police and both the state and federal governments to enhance security measures and provide essential amenities for crime prevention.

“Easter is around the corner. Open your shops, do your business, and enjoy the season. We will ensure your security for legitimate transactions,” he assured the traders.
