The Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, has confirmed the tragic death of one of its priests, The Venerable Edwin Achi, while he was held in the custody of his abductors. The devastating loss underscores the escalating severity of insecurity and banditry across the state.

The Venerable Edwin Achi, who served as the Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero, in Chikun Local Government Area, was kidnapped alongside his wife and daughter on the night of October 28, 2025. The abduction occurred after armed bandits invaded their residence in the Nissi community, near the Kaduna Refinery.

The church confirmed the passing on Wednesday, describing it as a painful loss for the entire Diocese. This tragedy occurs while the Venerable Achi’s wife and daughter remain in the custody of the kidnappers. The abductors had previously demanded an exorbitant ransom of ₦600 million for the family’s release.
In honour of the deceased priest, the Diocese announced the cancellation of its annual ‘Stand Up for Jesus 2025’ event. The church has urgently appealed to the public for continued prayers for the safe and immediate return of the remaining hostages.
This incident further heightens public distress and concern over the unrelenting spate of kidnappings and banditry plaguing the North-West region, severely impacting religious leaders and vulnerable communities.
