Anyiam Chimezie Wins ₦500,000 at First-Ever Aba Mathematics Olympiad

The city of Aba witnessed a significant academic milestone as the first Aba Mathematics Olympiad concluded successfully on June 1, 2025, at Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic. The event was organised by the Rumexx Foundation, an educational initiative by Eke Eleanya Urum, founder of Risevest.

Anyiam Chimezie Divine emerged as the grand prize winner, walking away with ₦500,000. Iwuoha Amblessed Nnaemeka claimed second place with ₦300,000, while Ike-Umeojiaku Elvis Nzubechukwu secured third position and a ₦200,000 prize.

The Olympiad began on May 3 and featured several intense rounds of mathematical problem-solving. Although 200 schools were invited, 14 schools eventually participated in the contest. The top 10 students received cash prizes, and outstanding teachers were recognized with certificates and monetary awards.

Dr. Charles Nworu, event coordinator and a seasoned mathematician, stressed the importance of mathematics in today’s world.

“Mathematics is the foundation of scientific and technological progress. Events like this are essential, especially now that artificial intelligence and innovation are reshaping industries,” he said.

Founder Eke Urum shared his vision of positioning Aba as a leading centre for mathematics and scientific innovation in Africa.
He acknowledged generous support from stakeholders, including Mark Essien of Hotels.ng, and announced plans to expand the Olympiad in 2026, with more participants, bigger prizes, and wider reach.

Dr. Nworu also called on Abia State Governor Alex Otti to implement policies that make mathematics compulsory for STEM-related courses. He advocated for:

  • Recruiting top mathematics graduates,
  • Offering scholarships, and
  • Establishing universities of mathematical sciences.

The Rumexx Foundation aims to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and tech leaders by nurturing talent early.
With sustained efforts, Aba could soon become a global beacon of mathematical excellence.
