Residents of the Federal Capital Territory were thrown into confusion early Monday morning following an explosion at a bus stop near the Mogadishu Cantonment along the Abuja-Nyanya road. The Nigerian Army has since assured the public that the situation is under control, urging calm while investigations continue.
The blast, which occurred in front of the military barracks popularly known as Abacha Barracks, sparked fears among commuters and residents, with many scampering for safety. Eyewitnesses say the explosion was loud enough to shake nearby buildings and trigger panic across the area.
While unconfirmed reports suggest that a suspected suicide bomber may have died in the explosion, security operatives swiftly cordoned off the scene to prevent further escalation.
In a brief statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Nigerian Army said: “Explosion at bus stop opposite Mogadishu Cantonment Abuja. Situation under control. Details later.”
A top military source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that, “There is no cause for alarm. Our men are on top of the situation and the area is secure. We are investigating the source and nature of the explosion.”
Meanwhile, residents have called for increased surveillance in and around military installations, especially in high-traffic areas like the Abuja-Nyanya corridor, which has seen deadly attacks in the past.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities were yet to confirm the casualty figure or the exact cause of the explosion.
