Army Warns of Illicit Arms Surge Ahead of Festive Season

By Peter Onyekachukwu, Jos

Troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE have urged residents of Plateau State to intensify vigilance and share timely intelligence with security agencies as the festive and harvest periods draw near, warning that criminal elements may attempt to move illicit weapons during the season.

The caution followed the arrest of a suspected gunrunner at the Jebbu-Miango bypass checkpoint in Bassa Local Government Area on November 14, 2025, during a targeted operation conducted by troops of the Nigerian Army’s 3 Division.

Spokesperson for the operation, Major Samson Zhakom, said the suspect, identified as Ishaya Musa, was intercepted based on credible intelligence. A thorough search resulted in the recovery of six fabricated single-barrel rifles, two fabricated revolver rifles, one Dane gun, one expended cartridge, and other related materials.

He said the arrest reinforced concerns that weapons trafficking remains active within the North Central security corridor, adding that strong community cooperation is needed to prevent arms from reaching criminal groups.

Zhakom noted that the suspect and exhibits are in custody for further investigation, stressing that the latest recovery reflects ongoing efforts to dismantle illegal arms networks and maintain peace across Plateau communities.

He reaffirmed the Joint Task Force’s commitment to safeguarding rural residents, farmers, and commuters, calling on the public to report suspicious movements without fear.
