The community of Kabunga in Kware Local Government Area was plunged into mourning late Tuesday after a brutal midnight assault by bandits left at least two people dead, including a former councilor, Alhaji Yahaya Bawa Rumus.
Residents confirmed the gunmen stormed the community around midnight, firing sporadically and moving systematically from house to house. The attack resulted in the death of Rumus and one other person, with several residents abducted in the chaos.
A security source, Bakatsine, who was briefed by residents, reported the incident, with locals describing it as “another night of horror” for a region long under siege.
“The entire community is in shock. They killed our former councilor and one other person. Many people were taken. We don’t even know the number yet,” one resident lamented.
As of Wednesday morning, security agencies have not issued any official statement, and residents noted that no reinforcement arrived while the attack was underway. A local expressed frustration, stating, “The government keeps telling us they are on top of the situation, but people are being killed and abducted every week.”
The latest assault in Kware follows a recent surge in violence across the state. Just days prior, coordinated attacks were reported in multiple communities in Sabon-Birni LGA, including Yar Bulutu, Gajit, Alkalawa, Garin Magaji, and Damba, where several residents were killed, many injured, and an undisclosed number abducted.
Community observations suggest the renewed violence may be linked to recent developments in neighboring Zamfara State, specifically a reported truce between government actors and the notorious Bello Turji bandit faction in Shinkafi LGA. Locals fear this truce may be fueling increased attacks across the border areas of Isa and Sabon-Birni LGAs in Sokoto.
