Bayelsa Gov Diri Defects to APC, Receives VP Shettima, APC Governors in Yenagoa

By Peter Onyekachukwu

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection ceremony took place on Monday at the Bayelsa State Government House in Yenagoa and was attended by top APC leaders, including several governors and the Vice President, Kashim Shettima.

Shettima, who arrived in Yenagoa earlier in the day, led the delegation of APC governors and party stalwarts to receive Governor Diri into the ruling party.

The Vice President was received by Governor Diri and other government officials at the Government House before proceeding to the main event where the governor formally declared his membership of the APC.

The event, described as historic by political observers, marks a major shift in Bayelsa’s political landscape, as Diri becomes the first sitting governor from the PDP to join the APC in the current political cycle.

Party sources said the defection followed weeks of consultations between the governor and top APC leaders at the national level.
