DELTA: A 200-level Chemical Engineering student of the Federal University, Otuoke, has reportedly drowned in Ekoli Creek, Yenagoa, after attempting to swim across the water to win a N300 bet.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, February 23, when the student, whose name is yet to be confirmed, boasted to his friends that he could complete the swim. Witnesses said his coursemates contributed money for the bet, and he confidently entered the water. However, midway through, he struggled and suddenly disappeared beneath the surface.
“He made a bet with his coursemates to swim across the river, and they all contributed N300 each. Unfortunately, while swimming, he disappeared under the water and has not been seen since,” said a fellow student who requested anonymity.
Despite search efforts, his body has yet to be recovered. The university authorities and the Bayelsa State Police Command have not released an official statement regarding the incident.
This tragedy highlights the dangers of risky challenges and swimming in unfamiliar waters. Experts warn that many rivers and creeks have strong currents and hidden hazards, advising individuals to avoid unnecessary risks and only swim in monitored areas.
Efforts to locate the student’s remains are still ongoing as authorities and students await further updates.
