The Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC) has taken delivery of 20 electric and solar-powered vehicles to kickstart a modern, eco-friendly taxi service in Makurdi, Gboko, and Otukpo. This innovative project aims to offer residents a more sustainable, affordable, and environmentally conscious mode of transportation.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, BIPC Managing Director Mr. Raymond Asemakaha noted that the electric vehicles will help reduce transport costs and create employment opportunities for the state’s youth. He described the initiative as part of a broader government strategy to deliver improved value to citizens while promoting a cleaner, greener environment.
“Our goal is to scale this fleet to 100 electric taxis. This is about more than just transportation—it’s about efficiency, affordability, sustainability, and job creation,” Asemakaha said.
The new vehicles boast zero emissions and are equipped with advanced features including geofencing technology, onboard CCTV for enhanced passenger security, and an integrated control system to ensure smooth operations. Each vehicle can travel up to 500 kilometers on a single charge.
Asemakaha also unveiled plans for a dedicated assembly and charging facility at the Mergemax CNG/Petrol Station, near the BIPC headquarters. This hub will support ongoing maintenance and help ensure the long-term success of the initiative.
To further enhance accessibility, a mobile app is currently in development, allowing passengers to book rides and access taxi services 24/7.
Highlighting the high cost of transportation in Makurdi, Asemakaha emphasized the government’s commitment to lowering these expenses through sustainable solutions. He described the Benue Green Wheels initiative as a forward-thinking step toward improving residents’ quality of life and addressing environmental concerns.
Through this investment in green transport, the Benue State Government is reinforcing its dedication to inclusive growth, innovation, and ecological responsibility.
