Boko Haram Resurgence: Senate Urges Military Base in Adamawa as Akpabio Flags Foreign Insurgent Threat

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has revealed that many insurgents behind the recent Boko Haram resurgence are non-Nigerians who exploit Nigeria’s porous borders to launch attacks before retreating to neighboring countries.

Speaking in Abuja on renewed insurgent attacks in Adamawa and other North East states, Akpabio emphasized the need for tighter border control and vigilance.

In response, the Senate urged the Federal Government to establish a military base in Hong LGA, Adamawa State, to strengthen security and prevent further insurgent spread. It also directed NEMA to provide relief to affected communities and observed a minute of silence for victims.

The motion, sponsored by Senator Amunu Iya Abbas (PDP, Adamawa Central), detailed recent deadly attacks across several communities between January and May 2025, including the deaths of civilians and vigilantes, and widespread destruction of homes, schools, and places of worship.

Senator Mohammed Monguno (APC, Borno North) praised military efforts and President Tinubu’s resolve, but warned that recent redeployments to the Northwest left security gaps in the Northeast, which Boko Haram is now exploiting.

The Senate called for immediate action to bolster security and prevent a broader spread of the insurgency.
