Cash Theft: Delta NUJ in Turmoil: Secretary Sorokwu Kicked Out over Explosive Corruption Allegations, others

By Peter Onyekachukwu

President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Abdullahi Alhassan Yahya, has confirmed that the National Executive Council (NEC) has upheld the indefinite suspension slammed on the Delta State Council Secretary, Comrade Victor Sorokwu, over serious allegations of theft, corruption and abuse of office.

The decision, taken during the NEC meeting in Kano, followed a petition from a Press Centre vendor accusing Sorokwu of financial misappropriation, high-handedness, and gross ethical breaches.

Comrade Yahya said Sorokwu must immediately step aside to allow for a thorough probe, stressing that the NUJ will not tolerate any misconduct capable of tarnishing the union’s image.

An insider at the NUJ National Secretariat revealed that Sorokwu has been ordered to hand over all union property in his possession to the Assistant Secretary without delay.

He has also been instructed to keep away from the Press Centre until investigations are completed.

The NEC disclosed that a three-man special investigative committee will be dispatched to Delta State to dig into the allegations.

The panel will be tasked with interrogating witnesses, examining financial records, and compiling evidence before reporting back to the NEC.

According to the NEC, the final verdict on the case will be based strictly on the findings of the committee.

Union sources say the scandal has sent shockwaves through the Delta NUJ, with many members stunned by the gravity of the accusations.
