A cameraman with Channels Television, Kani Ben, has died following injuries he sustained in a road crash while on official assignment in Bauchi State.
Ben passed away around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday at the Intensive Care Unit of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for severe spinal cord injuries.
The accident occurred on Friday, February 6, 2026, along the Yashi–Yelwan Duguri Road in Alkaleri Local Government Area. Thirteen journalists from different media organisations were involved in the crash while returning from the commissioning of projects executed by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) in the state.
The team had just covered the inauguration and handover of a Government Secondary School in Yelwan Duguri by the Minister of State for Regional Development, Alhaji Uba Maigari Ahmadu, when the incident happened.
Eyewitnesses said the vehicle conveying the journalists attempted to overtake a convoy when the driver lost control. The vehicle reportedly veered off the road and somersaulted multiple times, throwing some occupants out.
All 13 journalists sustained varying degrees of injuries, including head trauma, bruises and fractures. Ben, who was seated in the front, suffered critical spinal cord damage. He underwent surgery a day after the accident but later succumbed to complications while receiving medical care.
He is survived by his wife and two children.
The incident has thrown the media community in Bauchi and beyond into mourning, as colleagues described him as a dedicated professional who died in the line of duty.
