Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) has restated its commitment to Nigerian Content development, disclosing that it provides employment and contract opportunities worth an estimated annual average of over $1 billion.
The disclosure was made during the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Media Capacity Building Programme held in Warri on Tuesday. Speaking on behalf of Chevron’s General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Olusoga Oduselu, Saheed Praise Akinbola said the company prioritises investment in human capital as part of its long-term growth strategy.
Akinbola explained that CNL has trained about 400 journalists since the inception of its annual training programme. The 2025 edition, which commenced in Abuja and Lagos in July, extended to Warri this week in collaboration with the NUJ Warri Correspondents’ Chapel.
“As members of the fourth estate of the realm, your role as agenda-setters and opinion moulders cannot be over-emphasised,” Oduselu said, commending the media for its contributions to shaping perspectives on the oil and gas industry.
He noted that CNL pioneered the Advanced Writing and Reporting Skills (AWARES) programme with Pan Atlantic University in 2014, benefiting more than 120 journalists to date. Through initiatives like AWARES, the company seeks to enhance professional capacity and strengthen its relationship with the media.
On community development, Oduselu highlighted Chevron’s transition from the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) to the Host Community Development Trusts (HCDTs) under the Petroleum Industry Act of 2021. He said the company has contributed billions of naira to Regional Development Committees over the years, funding hundreds of community projects.
He added that through the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND), Chevron continues to impact lives by promoting economic empowerment and supporting sustainable development across the region.
Beyond oil production, Chevron is also one of Nigeria’s largest contributors of high-quality domestic gas. Investments in gas gathering and processing, Oduselu said, have helped reduce routine flaring in CNL’s operations by over 97 percent in the last decade.
“Chevron believes that affordable, reliable, and cleaner energy is critical to building a more sustainable world,” Oduselu said, adding that the company will continue to lower carbon emissions while pursuing growth in both its traditional and lower-carbon businesses.
