Chief of Air Staff in China to Boost NAF’s Operational Capacity

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has announced that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is deepening its global defense partnerships to boost its operational effectiveness and fleet modernization. Abubakar made the statement during a week-long working visit to the People’s Republic of China, according to a statement from the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame.

Abubakar led a high-powered delegation to engage with top aviation and defense companies in Beijing, Haerbin, and Chengdu. The discussions focused on technology transfer, maintenance support, and training opportunities for NAF personnel. A major highlight was a meeting with the China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC) on August 25, where new agreements were reached for timely spare parts supply, after-sales support, and expanded training.

The NAF delegation also inspected key aircraft, including the Z-20 utility helicopter at the Haerbin Aircraft Company and the JF-17B prototype at a manufacturing facility in Chengdu, where they undertook simulator flights. The CAS also toured the AVIC Unmanned Aerial Systems Company, stressing the growing importance of drones in modern warfare.

“Our engagement here is critical to improving our Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance capabilities, which are essential for counterterrorism and internal security operations back home,” Abubakar stated. He concluded that the visit consolidated Nigeria’s defense diplomacy and reaffirmed its position as a reliable partner in global security cooperation.
