Civil Group Demands Swift Confirmation of Ramat Abdullahi as NERC Chairman

KANO/ABUJA—A civil advocacy group based in Kano, the Grassroots Initiative Concept, has called on the Nigerian Senate to urgently confirm the nomination of Ramat Abdullahi as the Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

In an open letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, the group praised Abdullahi as a person of “integrity, competence, and proven public service.”

The group expressed deep concern and surprise over the delay in Abdullahi’s confirmation process, noting that despite his successful appearance before the Senate Committee on Power, his name was inexplicably skipped on the Senate Order Paper dated October 22, 2025.

The letter alleged that the failure to confirm the nominee might be due to the influence of “certain vested interests” working to stall the process, thereby impeding democratic growth and national stability.

The Grassroots Initiative Concept defended Engr. Abdullahi’s suitability for the key role, stating that his nomination was made “in recognition of his distinguished record of service, integrity, and alignment with reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

The group highlighted Abdullahi’s decade of diligent and honorable service in various capacities, including local governance and advisory roles within the Kano State government and the private sector, asserting that his leadership experience makes him “eminently suited” to lead NERC.

Commending President Tinubu for the nomination, the group urged the Senate leadership to “stand on the side of fairness, patriotism, and progress” by confirming the appointment. They concluded by expressing confidence that Abdullahi’s confirmation would be vital in strengthening Nigeria’s energy sector and fostering national development.
