The Magistrates’ Court in Asaba has adjourned to November 7, 2025, the criminal trial of Pastor Sunday Ogbogho of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), who is standing trial for allegedly assaulting a journalist with a spanner.
Ogbogho was arraigned on August 11, 2025, before Magistrate Court 4, Asaba, over an alleged attack on journalist Kenneth Orusi at No. 5 Elder Ediale Street, off Ibusa Road, Asaba, which left the victim with head injuries and a bite wound. The case is filed under Case File No. 367/2025, with Mr. Alex Ibe as police prosecutor.
The charge, read in open court, accuses the cleric of assault occasioning harm, contrary to Section 355 of the Criminal Code. Ogbogho pleaded not guilty.
His defence counsel, identified as Chris, presented Engineer Pastor Edih Commissioner, Director of Operations at the Delta State Direct Labour Agency (DLA), as surety. But the Magistrate rejected field officers of government agencies as sureties, warning that such persons often evade responsibility when defendants jump bail.
Despite the reservations, the court granted Ogbogho bail in the sum of ₦500,000 with one surety in like sum. The surety must be a civil servant not below Grade Level 12 and provide valid identification, appointment and promotion letters, a current payslip, a sworn affidavit, and must undergo residence verification by the court and police officers.
In a stern caution, the Magistrate warned against attempts to bribe court staff, lawyers, or middlemen, stressing that “justice is not for sale.”
The case, earlier scheduled for August 25, was adjourned due to the absence of the prosecutor, Mr. Ibe, and will now continue in November.
