Cyclist Dies in Lagos Road Crash as Authorities Arrest Truck Driver

By Peter Onyekachukwu, Lagos

A cyclist lost his life on Monday following a road traffic accident involving a truck beneath the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Bridge along Airport Road, Ikeja.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, confirmed the incident, saying the crash involved a DAF articulated truck and an unsuspecting cyclist approaching the roundabout from the Maryland axis.

According to Giwa, preliminary investigations revealed that both the cyclist and the truck attempted to negotiate the roundabout simultaneously, during which the cyclist reportedly failed to maintain a safe distance from the moving truck, leading to fatal injuries.

He said operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who were on duty at the traffic signal corridor, swiftly responded to the incident and arrested the truck driver, who allegedly attempted to flee the scene. The suspect was subsequently handed over to officers of the Ikeja Police Division for further investigation and prosecution.

Officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) were later deployed to evacuate the remains of the deceased from the carriageway to prevent secondary accidents and restore traffic flow.

Eyewitnesses had earlier alleged that the truck was speeding and attempted to beat the traffic light before colliding with the cyclist. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

The state government expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
