An unconfirmed number of people have died following a horrific tanker fire accident that occurred in the early hours of Friday morning along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway in Ogun State.
The incident happened at about 1 a.m. when a 33,000-litre petrol tanker overturned near the Abeokuta–Kobape–Siun–Sagamu Interchange.
According to Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the accident was caused by excessive speeding and loss of control, resulting in the massive tanker spilling its flammable contents onto the highway and erupting into an inferno.
The resulting fire was so intense that it also destroyed a truck and a tow vehicle parked along the roadside and knocked out power by destroying a PHCN cable supplying electricity to Mowe and surrounding areas.
While the exact number of casualties has not been determined, rescue and emergency services—including TRACE, the Ogun State Fire Service, FRSC, and the Police—are on the scene working to quench the fire, carry out the decantation process, and restore normalcy.
Motorists are being urged to exercise patience and follow the traffic diversions put in place by the multi-agency emergency team.
