DELTA: The Vice Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap aimed at transforming the institution into a global hub of academic excellence, research, and innovation.
Speaking at the 17th convocation press conference, Prof. Asagba, outlined a sweeping agenda designed to reposition DELSU among top ranking universities worldwide.
“We are laying a foundation for a future ready DELSU one that is not only academically sound but innovation driven and socially responsive,” he said.
“This administration is committed to a transparent, inclusive, and strategic transformation.”
The Vice Chancellor’s blueprint, derived from a SWOT analysis, covers critical areas such as staff recruitment, curriculum upgrade, artificial intelligence integration, and international partnerships. According to him, DELSU must rise to meet the challenge posed by emerging universities across Delta State and Nigeria.
“Our vision is clear to promote inclusive learning, advance knowledge through teaching and research, and serve society with purpose,” he stated.
Among the initiatives rolled out are the establishment of new faculties in Environmental Sciences, Computing Sciences, and Allied Health Sciences.
Plans are also underway to launch a Business School in Warri, expand postgraduate enrollment, and reposition the Entrepreneurship Centre into an innovation hub.
“We are not only enhancing our ICT capacity but also investing in infrastructure, digital records, and bandwidth expansion,” Asagba added, noting the restructuring of the ICT Directorate and computerization of processes.
The university’s revenue drive includes revamping DELSU Investment Ltd., setting up a microfinance bank, and commercializing research. Open and Distance Learning will also receive a boost through public-private partnerships.
A new Endowment and Foundation Fund Committee has been formed to attract funds from alumni, multinational firms, and global institutions like the PTDF, UNDP, NCC, and the Gates Foundation.
Prof. Asagba also highlighted measures to strengthen accountability, including a whistle-blower platform, a Revenue Monitoring Committee, and a Facilities Maintenance Committee to cut costs.
He emphasized the importance of community and stakeholder relations, noting that the university would continue to engage host communities and uphold cordial relations with governing authorities.
“We must create a learning environment where excellence thrives,” he said. “From improved student welfare and hostel accommodation to better healthcare and security, we are addressing key needs head-on.”
The transformation effort also includes the inauguration of several centres, such as the Centre for National Linkages and Outreach, and the Centre for Product Development and Research Commercialization.
“Strategic partnerships with the private sector will be crucial in empowering our students and local communities with practical skills and opportunities,” he added.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment, Prof. Asagba concluded, “This is not just a plan. It’s a movement. DELSU must stand out not only in Nigeria but across the world as a model of integrity, innovation, and impact.”
