The Delta State Police command has condemned the assault on a young man by policemen near Asaba Specialist Hospital. The Commissioner of Police Delta State, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda acted after seeing a video circulating on X and other social media channels showing officers beating the victim on Sunday, July 27.
CP Abaniwonda said, “It is not in the character of this Command to trample on the rights of citizens, assault or harass people.” He ordered that the men be identified, detained and brought before headquarters for disciplinary action. Their team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, has been queried.
CP Abaniwonda assured the public that the erring officers will “be decisively dealt with in accordance with the Police Act and regulations to serve as a deterrent to others,” and stressed that such conduct will not be tolerated under his watch.
He tasked all officers to uphold the tenets of professional policing and respect fundamental human rights as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended). He appealed for calm and promised justice for the victim.
