Delta Ethnic Peace and Unity Cup Kicks Off with Exciting Novelty Match…

The 2024 Delta State Ethnic Peace and Unity Cup kicked off with great enthusiasm on Saturday, November 16, 2024, as ethnic nationalities across the state gathered to promote peace and harmony through sports.
The tournament opened with a thrilling novelty match held in Ode-Itsekiri, Big Warri, featuring teams representing the state’s diverse ethnic groups.
In the match, Team One, comprising players from the Ijaw and Itsekiri communities, secured a decisive 2-0 victory over Team Two, made up of players from the Ika, Ndokwa, Isoko, and Urhobo ethnic groups. The Ijaw/Itsekiri team took the lead in the first half and sealed their win with a second goal in the second half, much to the delight of their supporters.
Speaking to journalists after the match, Comrade Sharif Molade, one of the event’s organizers and a community leader, praised the participants and communities for their commitment to peace and unity. He said:
“This tournament is a testament to our collective desire for harmony in Delta State. I commend the youth and the ethnic nationalities for coming together to make this event a success. It is our hope that this Peace and Unity Cup will foster stronger bonds among our people and create a lasting legacy of peaceful coexistence.”
Ex-international footballer Edema Fuludu, who also attended the match, commended Comrade Sharif Molade for his dedication to promoting peace through sports. Fuludu emphasized the unifying power of football, stating:
“Football is a universal language that brings people together. This tournament is a step in the right direction for Delta State, as it shows how sports can be used to bridge divides and build peace among ethnic nationalities.”
Similarly, another ex-international, Sam Some, lauded the initiative, highlighting its potential to positively impact the state. “Football tournaments like this go a long way in fostering peace and unity, not only in Delta State but across Nigeria. I hope this serves as an example for others to follow,” he said.


The tournament is set to continue with matches in various locations across the state, culminating in a grand finale in Ororokpe,in Okpe local government area.
Chief Sharif Molade concluded by expressing gratitude to the Ode-Itsekiri community for hosting the kickoff match and to all stakeholders for their support. “This is just the beginning. Together, we can use football to build a more peaceful and united Delta State,” he added.
