DELTA: Tension gripped the town of Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State on Wednesday following the alleged killing of a student of Ogwashi-Uku Polytechnic, Peter Eyorowalebo, by a vigilante operative identified as Ike Peter.
Eyorowalebo, a 29-year-old student, was reportedly shot dead in his room while preparing for his upcoming examinations. The tragic incident occurred around 9:30 am, prompting swift intervention by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ogwashi-Uku, who received a distress call and mobilised officers to the scene.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the Delta State Police Command said the student was found in a pool of blood and was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His remains have been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, has ordered the immediate arrest of the suspect and directed that he be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and discreet investigation.
“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident. I have directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of SCID to ensure a meticulous investigation. No stone will be left unturned in the pursuit of justice for the victim,” the Commissioner said.
CP Abaniwonda also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and the student community of the polytechnic, urging them to remain calm while the police conduct a full investigation.
“This is a tragic loss, and I want to assure the family and students that justice will be served. We will not condone any form of lawlessness or abuse of power by individuals entrusted with security responsibilities,” he added.
Police spokesperson SP Edafe Bright, who issued the statement in Asaba, reiterated the Command’s commitment to transparency and accountability in handling the case.
The incident has sparked outrage among students and residents, many of whom are calling for stricter regulation of vigilante groups operating in the state.
