Delta Police Bust Suspected Robber in Asaba Canteen Raid, Recover Two Illegal Firearms

A swift operation by operatives of the Delta State Police Command has led to the arrest of a suspected armed robber and the recovery of two illegal firearms in Asaba, the state capital.

Acting on credible intelligence, the Command’s DOPS Buffalo Team stormed a known criminal hideout disguised as a food canteen on June 9, 2025, and arrested one Kingsley Ugochukwu, aged 40. The operation was led by DSP Charles Evboifo, who confirmed that the suspect, upon sighting the operatives, attempted to dispose of a locally fabricated Beretta pistol, which was promptly recovered.

Further investigation took a surprising turn when the suspect was found to have secretly called his wife from custody, instructing her to remove a weapon hidden in their home. Acting on this lead, the police arrested the wife, whose confession led them to an uncompleted building where a single-barrel long-range gun was recovered.

Confirming the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, reiterated the Command’s resolve to rid the state of criminal elements, particularly cultists and armed robbers who hide under the cover of normal businesses.

“This arrest highlights our strategy of hitting criminal syndicates where they least expect it. No hideout is safe when the lives of our people are at stake,” CP Olufemi stated. He urged residents to continue partnering with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities promptly.

The Delta State Police Command called on the public to provide timely and credible information that can help fight crime, assuring that all reports would be treated confidentiality.

The case is currently under further investigation, and charges are expected to follow.
