Delta Police Enforce Fireworks Ban, Urge Residents to Celebrate Safely This Festive Season

By Peter Onyekachukwu

The Delta State Police Command has stepped up security measures ahead of Christmas and New Year celebrations, warning residents to adhere strictly to the long-standing ban on fireworks and other pyrotechnic items.

The warning follows the recent seizure of fireworks worth millions of naira during operations across various parts of the state, which police described as a serious security concern.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, said the festive season, while a time for joy and celebration, often presents opportunities for criminals to exploit fireworks to mask illegal activities or create panic in communities.

He emphasized that the ban on fireworks, knockouts, bangers, and other pyrotechnics is intended to safeguard lives and property, not to diminish festive excitement. The CP noted that in past years, criminals have used the noise from fireworks to carry out attacks on unsuspecting residents.

Parents and guardians were advised to caution their children, many of whom traditionally associate fireworks with holiday fun. The CP warned that violators risk arrest, prosecution, and confiscation of the banned items.

Traders stockpiling fireworks ahead of the holiday season were also cautioned, with Abaniwonda stressing that there will be no leniency for those breaking the law. Safety and peace of residents remain the top priority of the Delta State Police.

To ensure compliance, the CP directed DCP Operations, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, and all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders to intensify patrols and enforce the ban across their jurisdictions.

He explained that the enforcement drive forms part of a broader strategy to curb crime during a period when criminal activities typically increase due to greater economic activity, travel, and nightlife.

The command commended residents who have cooperated with the police in past operations, noting that community vigilance and timely reporting have been instrumental in several successful seizures.

Members of the public were urged to report any sale or use of fireworks immediately to the nearest police station or through the command’s control room numbers: 08036684974, 08114895600, and 08025666914.

As Deltans prepare to celebrate, the police appealed for continued cooperation, promising a festive period that is safe, peaceful, and free from disruption or fear.
