DELTA: Two brothers, Maxwell Mathew, 25, and Samuel Mathew, 21, have been arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly abducting and robbing a young man of seventy million naira and his luxury vehicle in Abraka, Delta State.
The suspects were apprehended in a hotel in Benin City, Edo State, where they had reportedly gone into hiding and were planning to sell the stolen Mercedes Benz GLC 300 belonging to their victim, Patrick Omoregie.
Residents of Abraka have commended the police for their prompt action and urged security agencies to intensify patrols and surveillance to curb rising crime in the area.
According to police sources, the suspects held Omoregie at gunpoint and forcefully transferred N70 million from his bank account. They also made away with his mobile phone, N150,000 in cash, and his car. Law enforcement agents were able to recover N30 million of the stolen funds as well as the stolen car.
Other items recovered include two high-end power bikes, a helmet, a cut-to-size locally made single barrel gun, and live cartridges. The arrest followed a swift investigation and tracking operation after the incident was reported in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area, Delta State.
A senior police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity described the suspects as notorious elements who had been on the radar of security agencies for their involvement in violent crimes around Abraka and its environs.
“These brothers have been causing fear in the community, and we’re glad they’ve been apprehended. Our men moved swiftly and arrested them just before they could sell the vehicle. The recovered funds and items will serve as evidence when they are charged to court,” the officer said.
