A routine journey turned tragic on Saturday when the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Effurun, Professor Ezekiel Agbalagba, was involved in a fatal road accident along the Abraka Road in Delta State.
The incident plunged his family and the university community into grief and anxiety, as the crash left the respected academic injured and claimed the life of his younger brother.
The accident reportedly occurred along the Abraka axis of the state while Professor Agbalagba was travelling with members of his family.
Sources said the vehicle conveying the Vice Chancellor was involved in a ghastly collision, resulting in severe damage to the car.
Professor Agbalagba was said to have sustained serious injuries and was immediately rushed to an undisclosed hospital for urgent medical attention.
As of the time of filing this report, he was still receiving treatment, with no official statement yet issued on his condition.
Tragically, the accident claimed the life of his younger brother, who reportedly died on the spot.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described the crash as severe, noting that the vehicle was completely wrecked and destroyed beyond repair.
The development has cast a pall over the FUPRE community, with staff and students expressing shock and concern over the incident.
Attempts to reach the Vice Chancellor on Sunday afternoon were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone remained switched off.
A WhatsApp message sent to him by this reporter had also not been responded to as of the time of filing this report.
