In a series of successful operations, Delta State’s CP Special Assignment Team has made significant strides in the fight against kidnapping and illegal arms possession.
According to a statement by Edafe Bright, Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, Asaba,these operations have led to the arrest of several suspects and the recovery of deadly weapons, including AK-47 rifles, a pump action gun, and a Beretta pistol, among others.
Arrest of Suspected Kidnapper, Recovery of AK-47 Rifle and Ammunition
On March 26, 2025, operatives from the CP Special Assignment Team, led by ASP Julius Robinson, successfully apprehended a suspected kidnapper, Chedeye Mohammed, in Rivers State. Mohammed was tracked and arrested at around 6:20 PM after fleeing from an earlier crime scene. During questioning, he led officers to a concealed stash of weapons in a bush near a trailer park in Rivers State.
The team recovered an AK-47 rifle with thirteen rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition. Initial investigations revealed that Mohammed and his gang had been involved in kidnappings in Ughelli, Agbarho, and other areas in Delta State before hiding out in Rivers. Efforts to capture other members of his gang are ongoing.
Sting Operation in Kogi State Nets Armed Robbers, Gun Runners
In a separate operation, the CP Special Assignment Team acted on credible intelligence and carried out a raid in Anyangba town, Kogi State. Three men—Zakari Mohammed (31), Ibrahim Mumuni (29), and Mohammed Hamisu (25)—were arrested on charges of armed robbery and gun running.
A search of their residence led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and an automatic pump action gun. Another suspect, Samaila Mohammed (35), was arrested in connection with the illicit trade of firearms, with operatives recovering a Beretta pistol loaded with three rounds of live ammunition and additional cartridges. All suspects are in custody, and investigations continue.
Arrest of Ammunition Dealer Linked to Kidnapping Rings
On March 25, 2025, operatives carried out a covert operation in Olomoro, Isoko South LGA, where they arrested Emu Lucky, a 35-year-old man from Igbide community. During a search of his home, officers discovered 82 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. Further investigation revealed that Lucky was involved in supplying ammunition to Mohammed Bellow, a known kidnapper already in custody. Lucky acted as a middleman, facilitating the distribution of arms to criminal groups.
Police Commissioner Promises Ongoing Action
Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, has commended the efforts of the operatives and reassured residents of the state that the fight against crime will continue.
“We will ensure that all Deltans and residents in the state sleep with their two eyes closed,” he stated, promising to maintain the momentum in securing the state. He also urged residents to continue cooperating with law enforcement to maintain peace and safety.
As investigations continue, the Delta State Police force remains committed to dismantling criminal networks and improving security across the region.
