A routine vehicle inspection turned into a nightmare for passengers traveling from Effurun to Ozoro in Delta State when their commercial transport driver sped off with their belongings.
The incident occurred on Monday, March 17, 2025, at a Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) checkpoint along the Ughelli-Asaba Road in Ozoro.
Eyewitnesses said the driver had been pulled over for a routine check when VIO officials asked all passengers to disembark. As soon as they did, the driver took off at high speed, leaving the unsuspecting passengers stranded and in shock.
One of the victims, Divine Ologide, a 200-level student of Delta State University, narrated the ordeal. “We were told to step down while they checked the vehicle’s papers. Before we knew it, the driver zoomed off with all our belongings. It was like a movie,” he said.
Another victim, a trader, lamented losing smoked fish worth over N500,000, while a businessman said he lost brand-new laptops valued in millions of naira. Several students traveling with provisions and documents were also left empty-handed.
Attempts to chase the fleeing vehicle were futile, as it quickly disappeared. The affected passengers have called on security agencies to track down the driver and recover their belongings.
Authorities are yet to comment on the incident, but concerns are rising over the security of passengers using commercial transport services in Delta State.
