*Soldiers Are Special to Us – Diri
By Peter Onyekachukwu, Yanagua
BAYELSA: Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has described members of the Nigerian Armed Forces as a special group of people whose sacrifices ensure the peace and stability of the nation.

Diri made the remark during a thanksgiving service to mark the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the King of Glory Chapel, Government House, Yenagoa, on Sunday.
The governor emphasized the need for Nigerians to always honor both serving and retired military personnel, noting that their commitment to safeguarding lives should never be taken for granted.
“Today, we are gathered to appreciate God for the lives of some very special people who have dedicated their lives, even unto death, for this country,” Diri said.
“Soldiers are special to us as a country and as a state. We must honor and celebrate their sacrifices. While we thank God for the families of our fallen heroes, we also celebrate those who are still with us.”
Speaking further, Governor Diri urged politicians to respect the country’s electoral process and avoid acts that undermine democracy. He admonished politicians to accept election results with maturity, saying democracy thrives when people respect the rule of law.
“For democracy to be sustained, politicians must learn to accept defeat when it comes. Electoral rules should not be violated because of personal interests. We all have a responsibility to ensure civil governance is upheld,” he said.
Following recent clashes between rival cult groups in Igbogene, Governor Diri directed security agencies to strengthen their presence in the area, particularly around the newly inaugurated Bayelsa Transport Terminal.
He warned youth groups against extorting passengers and transport operators at the terminal, saying the government would not tolerate criminal activities at the facility.
“I have directed security agencies to beef up security at Igbogene and around the Bayelsa Transport Terminal. Any youth group involved in extortion should stay away from the terminal,” Diri warned.
In a sermon titled “The Power of Unity,” Pastor David Yalah, Chaplain of the King of Glory Chapel, emphasized the importance of paying the price for unity.
“Unity requires sacrifice. If no one is willing to pay the price, everyone suffers. The longer it takes to achieve unity, the higher the price,” Yalah said.
The remembrance service was attended by Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Leader of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Monday Bubou, President of the Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Daniel Ayah, and other top government officials.
Also present were former Deputy Governor Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah (rtd), Secretary to the State Government Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, Chief of Staff Dr. Peter Akpe, and Head of Service Mrs. Biobelemoye Charles-Onyema.
