Eight Yakoyo Restaurant Staff Remanded for Attacking Lagos Taskforce

LAGOS, NIGERIA – Eight staff members of the popular Yakoyo Amala Joint in Victoria Island have been remanded in custody after being arraigned on charges of attempted murder for allegedly attacking enforcement officials from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI/LAGESC) and the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO).

The Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, ordered the remand of the eight accused persons following their arraignment. They include two females, Ibiwunmi Oladunjoye (30yrs) and Ajoke Adegoke (24yrs), alongside six male co-defendants. All the accused entered a not guilty plea to the charges.

The court subsequently adjourned the case until January 28, 2026, pending the receipt of legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Attack Followed Environmental Crackdown

The incident stems from an enforcement exercise on December 10, when officials visited the restaurant on Sinari Adaranijo Street to address violations of environmental standards, specifically the indiscriminate discharge of untreated wastewater, fats, and oil into the environment.

During the lawful operation, the restaurant staff allegedly launched a violent attack on the KAI officers, resulting in injuries to four officials.

The State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, strongly condemned the actions, stating that the restaurant not only broke a government seal but proceeded to “unleash armed thugs on officials who were lawfully carrying out their duties. This crosses every line.”
