The Nigerian Legion, an association of ex-servicemen, has called on the government at all levels to urgently address the plight of widows of fallen heroes by improving their living conditions and providing the necessary welfare support.
The newly elected Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Bayelsa State Council, Mr. Baratuaipre Allison-Alamini, made the appeal shortly after being sworn in to pilot the affairs of the body.
Allison-Alamini assured members that his administration would prioritize the welfare of widows and ensure their voices are heard through sustained advocacy to relevant government authorities.
He pledged to work closely with the state government and the Federal Ministry of Defence to ensure that the widows and dependents of fallen heroes receive the benefits and recognition they deserve for the sacrifices made by their loved ones.
The chairman also promised to focus on the welfare of ex-servicemen across the state, while appreciating members of the Legion for the confidence reposed in him to serve.
The election, which was conducted under the supervision of officials from the Federal Ministry of Defence led by Lieutenant Colonel Bello Kaya, and a representative from the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), produced other executive members of the council.
Mr. Legion Odon Alfred was returned unopposed as Vice Chairman, while Mr. Amiekumo Angozi emerged as Treasurer of the body.
The Returning Officer and Head of the Electoral Committee, Mr. Aghomo Samson, described the election as peaceful, transparent, and credible. He commended members for their maturity and peaceful conduct before, during, and after the exercise.
Mr. Samson urged the newly elected leadership to embrace inclusivity and avoid division, while ensuring that all members of the Legion are carried along in the administration of the council’s affairs.
Also speaking, the representative of the SSG, Mr. Ogori Raymond, who is the Director of the Special Services Bureau in the SSG’s office, charged the new executive to run a transparent and accountable administration. He called for unity, fairness, and camaraderie among members to strengthen the council’s objectives.
In his remarks, the representative of the National Chairman, Council of Nigerian Legion, Mr. Toye Dele, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian veterans and preserving the nation’s military legacy.
