The Federal Government has summoned the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the management of Dangote Group to an emergency meeting in Abuja on Monday, September 8, in a bid to stop a nationwide strike scheduled to begin the same day.
The meeting, called by the Minister of Labour and Employment, follows NUPENG’s declaration of a total shutdown over alleged anti-union practices, a move already endorsed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The NLC has also directed its 54 affiliates and 36 state councils to mobilize in solidarity, describing the standoff as a battle for the survival of organised labour and the dignity of Nigerian workers.
The looming strike has sparked fears of fuel scarcity, economic paralysis, and social unrest if the issues between NUPENG and Dangote are not quickly resolved.
