Former LP Treasurer Clears Peter Obi of Campaign Fund Misuse Allegations

Former National Treasurer of the Labour Party (LP), Oluchi Oparah, has dismissed allegations that 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi misappropriated party funds during his campaign.

Oparah, speaking in a televised interview, described the claim — made by LP chieftain Abayomi Arabambi — as “false, baseless, and misleading.” She insisted that Obi personally financed his campaign and even injected his own resources into the party’s operations.

“There was nothing like that. Mr Obi never touched any money meant for the party. In fact, he lifted the LP from zero level to where it is today,” Oparah stated.

According to her, the LP was burdened with debts and unpaid staff salaries before Obi’s arrival. She said he not only fulfilled all financial obligations but also funded programmes and activities solely from his personal funds.

Oparah explained that under electoral regulations, campaign accounts are separate from a political party’s official accounts.

“The truth is, the Labour Party didn’t have a dime at that time. Mr Obi spent from his own pocket — unlike many politicians who drain party funds,” she said.

The former treasurer also urged Nigerians to focus on holding the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) accountable rather than targeting opposition figures without evidence.

She challenged those accusing Obi to present verifiable proof of any financial wrongdoing.

“Anyone making claims should show us the exact account to which they paid any money to the LP,” she declared.

Praising Obi’s well-known philanthropy, Oparah noted that his charitable work predated his presidential ambition.

“Anyone who knows Mr Obi understands that generosity is part of his nature like the air he breathes,” she said.
