Nigeria will bid farewell to one of its most iconic leaders, former President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as burial rites are scheduled to take place in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, at 2:00 p.m., following the arrival of his remains at 12 noon.
The announcement was made on Monday by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, who addressed the press after consulting with the late President’s family and associates in London, where Buhari passed away on Sunday following a prolonged illness.
Governor Radda described the loss as “monumental,” calling Buhari a “national icon whose legacy will remain etched in Nigeria’s history.” He offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the former president’s soul and extended condolences to the Buhari family, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and all Nigerians.
“We pray Almighty Allah to grant him eternal rest and reward him with Aljannatul Firdaus,” Radda said. “May Allah give us the strength to bear this loss.”
The Katsina State Government, in partnership with federal authorities and the family of the late president, is coordinating efforts to ensure a dignified and befitting burial, in line with Islamic rites and Buhari’s humble persona.
Born in 1942, Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, before returning to power as a democratically elected President in 2015, serving two full terms until 2023. Known for his austere lifestyle, commitment to anti-corruption, and strong-willed leadership, Buhari remained a towering figure in Nigeria’s political scene for over four decades.
The funeral is expected to attract dignitaries from across the country and beyond, including top government officials, foreign diplomats, former heads of state, and other prominent figures who will gather to honor a man many considered a symbol of discipline and national service.
National flags will be flown at half-mast across public buildings, and tributes continue to pour in from all corners of the country as Nigeria prepares to lay to rest one of its most consequential leaders.
