Fresh Tensions in Accra as Nigerians Face Calls to Leave Ghana

By Peter Onyekachukwu

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Accra demanding that Nigerians, especially the Igbo, leave Ghana, a development that has sparked fear and concern among the Nigerian community and raised fresh questions about the future of relations between both West African neighbours.

A representative of the Nigerian Union of Traders Association in Ghana (NUTAG) said, “Our people are here legally, doing business and paying taxes. We are not here to take over Ghana. We only want to live in peace and continue our daily work.”

An Igbo leader in Accra appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to ensure the safety of all Nigerians. He said, “No one should be intimidated or threatened simply because of their nationality. We call on the Ghanaian authorities to protect lives and property.”

In Abuja, a senior Nigerian foreign affairs official assured Nigerians of government support. He said, “We are in touch with our mission in Accra and we have assured Nigerians living in Ghana that their safety is our priority. We urge our citizens to remain calm and avoid any action that may escalate the situation.”

Sadeeq Musa in Nigeria said, “The Ghanaians want Nigerians totally out of Ghana. Where is ECOWAS and Nigeria Presidency in this?”

Prince Ogunjuwon Adeola Big Mario in his reaction said, “Do you guyz realise, Nigerians also accommodate your people’s here in our so called Nigeria. Don’t start what you can’t finish, if there conflict let settle amicably. We are one colour, same continent.”

Observers warned that the protest could strain relations between both countries if not carefully managed. Nigeria and Ghana have enjoyed long-standing ties in trade, culture, and education, but tensions like this threaten the peaceful coexistence of citizens in both nations.
