UYO: Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, has assured athletes representing the state at the upcoming Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF) of cash rewards for winning medals, as he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports development.

Speaking during a surprise visit to the state’s athletes’ camp at the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre (DASAC) in Ikot Ada Idem, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, the governor encouraged the contingent to take the competition seriously, emphasizing its potential to launch careers in national and international sports.

“This is a huge opportunity provided by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and I want to encourage everyone to give their best. From here, talents can be discovered for national and international competitions,” Eno stated.

Determined to ensure Akwa Ibom dominates the medal table, the governor announced financial incentives for athletes who secure podium finishes.

“We cannot host this event and not win medals. For every gold, silver, or bronze medal, there will be a reward. I will personally receive you after the games and ensure the winners are rewarded,” he assured.

Akwa Ibom is set to field over 300 athletes across 17 sporting events as the state hosts the festival from April 1 to 9. The competition, an initiative of the NDDC, aims to promote sports tourism and talent discovery in the Niger Delta region.
