DELTA: Prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State have raised alarm over speculations that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is planning to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In an open letter signed by Theophilus Ekiyor, Ochuko Oghenekome, and Ezekiel Chukwudi, the party stalwarts demanded that the governor clarify his political stance to end the growing rumours.

The letter alleged that Governor Oborevwori had been holding secret meetings with top aides of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The meetings, they claimed, are aimed at paving the way for the governor’s defection to the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.

The PDP leaders accused the governor of sponsoring factions within the APC to weaken the party’s structure in Delta State while allegedly offering financial incentives to some APC members to further his political agenda.

They pointed to Oborevwori’s public endorsement of President Tinubu’s policies at a recent Urhobo Progressives Union (UPU) event as a key incident fueling the rumours. According to the letter, the governor was quoted as saying, “If President Tinubu fails, I also fail,” a statement that has unsettled the PDP faithful.

The leaders warned that such actions are eroding trust within the party, stating, “Your actions have serious implications for the future of our party. We cannot afford to have our fortunes undermined by personal ambitions.”

The letter also criticized Oborevwori’s governance style, accusing him of sidelining loyal PDP members who played significant roles in his emergence as governor.

They described his approach as a “winner-takes-all” style of leadership that is demoralizing party supporters and jeopardizing the PDP’s dominance in Delta State.

The leaders reminded the governor of PDP’s long-standing influence in Delta State, emphasizing that the party has been a dominant political force since 1999.

They urged Governor Oborevwori to reaffirm his loyalty to the party and collaborate with party leaders to resolve any internal issues rather than pursue alleged defection plans.

The letter concluded with a stern call for transparency, stating: “We deserve respect and transparency from you. PDP members have stood by you through thick and thin, and we expect you to honor that trust.”

As of press time, Governor Oborevwori had not responded to the allegations.
