Governor Adeleke Resigns from PDP, Confirms Imminent Political Defection

The Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, has formally resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and is scheduled to announce his new political affiliation before December 13. This development was confirmed by the state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi.

Speaking during a political programme on Rave FM in Osogbo on Tuesday, Alimi verified that the Governor quietly submitted his resignation letter to party executives in Sagba Abogunde, Ward 2, Ede North Local Government, on November 4.

The Commissioner explicitly attributed Governor Adeleke’s exit to what he characterized as a longstanding internal crisis plaguing the PDP, particularly at the national level.

“The governor of Osun State and the Asiwaju of Ede has formally resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party,” Alimi stated, adding that the resignation letter had been prepared “for quite a long time.”

Alimi emphasized that the ongoing national-level factionalization within the PDP presented a significant threat to Governor Adeleke’s electoral stability and his capacity to secure a legitimate nomination ahead of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) December 15 deadline for the next governorship election.

The Commissioner explained that the move was a necessary political action to “face reality” as the state election approaches, noting that the INEC window for nomination is rapidly closing.

Mr. Alimi assured the residents of Osun State to remain composed and maintain their support while disclosing that active consultations are underway regarding the Governor’s forthcoming political destination.

He assured the public that “On or before December 12 or 13, everybody would have known” the Governor’s new party. The Commissioner underscored that the resignation would have been entirely unnecessary had the PDP not been fractionalized at the national level. He further dismissed claims that the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) welcomed the defection, suggesting that the APC had anticipated the Governor would remain vulnerable to legal challenges within a fragmented PDP structure.
