Govt College Ughelli @ 80: Old Boys Roll Out Plans for Celebration

DELTA: Government College, Ughelli, in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State,is set to mark its 80th anniversary on January 17, 2025. Established in 1945, the historic institution has produced notable alumni who have significantly contributed to various sectors in Nigeria and beyond.

The President-General of the Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association (GCUOBA), Worldwide, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje, announced the milestone during a press conference held at his law chambers in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area.

Speaking on the upcoming celebration, Akpomudje disclosed that the event is themed “80 Years of Excellence: Honouring the Past, Inspiring the Future” and will run from January 15 to January 17, 2025.

The activities lined up for the anniversary include a musical concert, a gala night, commissioning of legacy projects, thanksgiving service, and a groundbreaking ceremony for a 1,000-seater auditorium. A lecture series will also feature prominently during the event.

One of the unique highlights will be the induction of “Ancient Mariners”, a recognition for alumni who have left the school 55 years ago or more. According to Akpomudje, “We still have members of the 1948 class alive, and this event will give us an opportunity to honor them and reconnect with other alumni.”

Awards will also be presented to individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to the school’s development.

Akpomudje emphasized the Old Boys Association’s commitment to maintaining the school’s legacy, noting that the association has spent over ₦2 billion in the last 20 years to sustain the school’s infrastructure. He highlighted the association’s pivotal role in tarring all roads within the school and ensuring its serene environment.

“Government College, Ughelli remains a beacon of excellence. Despite the challenges in the education sector, the Old Boys have kept the school’s heritage alive. The beauty of the school today is a result of our collective effort,” he said.

He also lamented the government’s lack of support for the school, urging authorities to collaborate more with the Old Boys to restore the institution’s academic excellence.

The President-General called on the public, especially alumni worldwide, to participate in the celebration. “This is a unique event. We invite all Old Boys, their families, and friends of the school to join us in this historic moment,” he said.
