The Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Comrade Nkem Nwaeke, has called on journalists in Warri and its environs to sustain a cordial and professional working relationship with both government and the private sector in the interest of good governance and development.
Nwaeke made the call during an unscheduled visit to the newly completed Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Warri Correspondents’ Chapel Secretariat.
He congratulated members of the chapel for the achievement, describing the new secretariat as a major milestone for journalism practice in the area.
“On behalf of my boss, the Right Honourable Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, I congratulate the Chairman and members of the Warri Correspondents’ Chapel for this landmark achievement,” he said.
According to him, the new facility has changed the narrative for journalists who had operated for years without a purpose-built structure.
“This beautiful complex now offers journalists a functional and dignified environment to work, collaborate and file their reports. It is a boost to media practice in Delta State,” Nwaeke stated.
He stressed that investment in media infrastructure reflects recognition of the press as a critical institution in democracy, urging journalists to continue to uphold the principles of responsible and balanced reporting.
“I urge you to sustain constructive engagement with both state and non-state actors. Responsible reporting and public education remain central to governance and civic trust,” he added.
Nwaeke also encouraged journalists to continue supporting the policies and programmes of the Delta State Government under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, while maintaining professionalism and independence.
Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Victor Okpomor, thanked Nwaeke for the visit and appreciated the goodwill shown towards the chapel.
He described the secretariat as a symbol of professional identity and institutional stability, noting that it would significantly improve the welfare and morale of journalists in Warri.
“This secretariat is a game-changer for us. We now have a place of our own where we can hold meetings, workshops and training sessions,” Okpomor said.
He also commended the CPS for strengthening relations between journalists and the Delta State House of Assembly, describing his efforts in promoting the Speaker’s legislative vision as commendable.
Other members of the chapel, including Comrades Michael Ikeogwu, Akpokona Omafuaire and Matthew Omonigho, shared positive experiences of working with Nwaeke and urged him to sustain his professional, humble and people-friendly disposition.
The State Vice Chairman of NUJ, Delta State Council, Comrade Felix Ekwu, was also present during the visit.
The journalists pledged continued cooperation with the Delta State Government and the leadership of the House of Assembly in promoting development through responsible journalism.
