DELTA: Tension has gripped the Mbiri community in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State after suspected herdsmen allegedly killed two residents on Tuesday. The victims were attacked along the farm road in Idumu-Ikeze Quarters and the Mbiri farm settlement road, sparking outrage among local youths. In response to the killings, angry youths reportedly stormed a Hausa settlement near Umunede between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., setting structures and motorcycles ablaze.A community source alleged that herdsmen, who had been terrorizing farmers in the area, were responsible for the attack.”One of the victims was inspecting his cassava farm when he encountered the herdsmen. The other was a laborer working in the area. Both were killed on the spot,” the source claimed. The Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, stating that security forces had been deployed to restore order.”Unknown hoodlums attacked the community, resulting in two deaths. The community suspected the Hausa residents were responsible, which led to a retaliatory attack. However, security personnel have calmed the situation,” Edafe said.He urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and assured that investigations were ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators. The combined efforts of the police, army, and local vigilantes prevented further escalation of the violence. However, residents remain on edge, fearing another outbreak of clashes.
