Tragedy struck at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, Niger State, following the sudden death of a 200-level student of Biochemistry, Fatima Adamu Muhammad.
The deceased was reported to have collapsed at her off-campus residence after complaining of not feeling well. Efforts by fellow students and neighbours to save her life proved abortive as she was later confirmed dead at the Lapai General Hospital.
Her death has thrown the university community into mourning, with students and lecturers expressing shock over the incident. Many described Fatima as a calm and disciplined student who showed great promise in her academic pursuit.
Confirming the development, the university management in a statement signed by its Head of Information, Alhaji Baba Akote, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss.
“The Management of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, regrets to announce the sudden death of Adamu Fatima Muhammad, a 200-level student of the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Natural Sciences,” the statement read.
According to the statement, Fatima’s passing is not only a great loss to her immediate family but also to the entire university community, as she was known for her discipline, dedication, and calm disposition among peers and lecturers.
Students who spoke in hushed tones around the campus said the news of her death was heartbreaking, especially given that she showed no signs of serious illness prior to her collapse.
The university management assured that it would continue to stand by the family of the deceased during this painful period, offering its condolences and prayers for the repose of her soul.
Fatima’s remains have since been handed over to her family and laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites, even as tributes continue to pour in from friends, colleagues, and staff of the institution.
