By Peter Onyekachukwu, Warri

Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, CFR, has been appointed as the new administrator of Rivers State, bringing decades of military expertise and strategic leadership to the oil-rich state.

His appointment signals a firm commitment to security and governance in a region that remains critical to Nigeria’s economic stability.

Born on September 27, 1960, in Nko, Cross River State, Ibas has had an illustrious career in the Nigerian Navy, culminating in his tenure as the 22nd Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) from 2015 to 2021.

His military journey began at the Nigerian Defence Academy as part of the 26 Regular Course in 1979, where he later earned a commission as a sub-lieutenant in 1983.

Throughout his career, Ibas gained extensive experience in naval warfare, security operations, and strategic planning. His leadership saw him command several naval vessels, oversee training programs, and manage key administrative portfolios.

Notably, he served as the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Chief of Administration at the Naval Headquarters, and the Navy Secretary.

His deep understanding of maritime security, acquired through years of service and international training, is expected to be instrumental in managing security challenges in Rivers State.

He has attended advanced military programs, including courses at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, the Amphibious Warfare School in the United States, and the National Defence College in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Recognized for his service, Ibas was conferred with the national honor of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) in 2022. His professional affiliations include the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) and the Nigerian Institute of Management.

Speaking on his new role, a security analyst, Rear Admiral (rtd) Francis Akpan, described Ibas as “a seasoned military strategist who understands the complexities of Nigeria’s security architecture. His leadership will be crucial in navigating the unique challenges of Rivers State.”

With Rivers State being a key economic hub, stakeholders are hopeful that Ibas’s expertise in security and governance will bring stability, particularly in addressing oil theft, communal tensions, and infrastructure development.

His appointment is seen as a strategic move to reinforce federal presence in the state while ensuring a balance between military oversight and civilian governance.
