ABUJA – The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has filed a three-count charge against former Delta North Senator, Peter Nwaoboshi, at the Federal High Court, Abuja, over allegations of defamation, cyberstalking, and threats to the life of Senator Ned Nwoko.
The case, registered under Charge No. FHC/ABJ/02/21/2025, accuses Nwaoboshi of making false statements on July 22, 2023, alleging that Senator Nwoko bribed judges with $1.5 million and attempted to manipulate judicial appointments.
According to the prosecution, the statements, which were widely circulated on social and mainstream media, were aimed at inciting public disorder and damaging Nwoko’s reputation.
“The accused knowingly spread false and harmful statements, intending to cause enmity and a breakdown of law and order,” the charge sheet reads.
Nwaoboshi is alleged to have violated Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, which prohibits using electronic communications to spread falsehoods that endanger lives or reputations.
If found guilty, the former senator could face significant legal consequences, including fines and possible imprisonment under the Cybercrimes Act.
Legal experts say the case will be closely monitored due to its potential implications for online speech and political discourse in Nigeria.
The Federal High Court is set to commence hearing, with key witnesses expected to testify on behalf of the Inspector General of Police.
