The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed a petition seeking to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central, citing failure to meet constitutional requirements.
In a statement posted on X on Thursday, INEC declared the petition “defective” as it did not fulfill the provisions of Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
“For a recall petition to be valid, it must be signed by more than half of the total registered voters in the constituency,” the commission noted.
Providing further clarification, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, revealed that only 43.86% of registered voters in Kogi Central endorsed the petition—falling short of the required threshold.
“The commission held its regular weekly meeting today, Thursday, April 3, 2025. Among other matters, it reviewed and approved the report of its physical count of the signatures and thumbprints submitted with the petition, in line with Clause 2(b) of the Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024,” Olumekun stated.
With this decision, INEC confirmed that the recall process would not proceed further.
