TEHRAN – In a chilling move signaling heightened post-war retribution, Iran on Monday announced the execution of a man it branded as “one of the leading spies of the Zionist regime” following his conviction for collaborating with arch-enemy Israel.
The executed man, identified as Bahman Choubi Asl, was hanged after being found guilty of working “closely” with Israeli intelligence and having “privileged access to vital and sovereign databases“ of the Islamic republic, according to the judiciary’s Mizan Online website.
The execution is the latest step in a fierce Iranian crackdown on alleged collaborators since the 12-day undeclared war in June. That conflict saw unprecedented Israeli air strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, which Tehran later countered with missile and drone attacks. The Israeli offensive tragically killed senior officers, nuclear scientists, and hundreds of civilians.
Since the fighting ceased, Iranian authorities have vowed swift justice for those suspected of working with Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, announcing a series of arrests.
This marks the second execution of a suspected spy in the last few weeks. The judiciary previously executed Roozbeh Vadi, who was accused of passing critical information about a nuclear scientist killed during the June hostilities.
With 20 other individuals recently arrested for alleged links with Israel now under investigation, Tehran is making it brutally clear that collaboration with its sworn enemy will be met with the ultimate penalty.
